Travel ten minutes south of St Helens and you will drive through the unassuming township of Beaumaris. This is one of the best spots for beach fishing in the entire area, but keep that one to yourself! Beaumaris is a great place to chill out and let nature come to you.
A hop skip and jump away from Beaumaris, and just 20km south of St Helens, is Scamander. With it’s iconic bridge over the Scamander River, Scamander is home to many a local and shack owner. With top surf breaks and perfect swimming holes, Scamander’s beach is a favourite all year round and the home of the local surf life saving club. Upper Scamander is home to the well loved Eureka Farm – a paradise of berry bushes and fruit trees. Visit their farm gate cafe and sample preserves, chutneys, jams, icecreams, cakes and more, all made from their own produce.
Boasting a supermarket, post office, service station, golf club, hotel, two caravan parks, surf shop, surf life saving club and general store, Scamander is a well serviced town known for it’s easily accessible beach and river mouth. The Scamander River is popular amongst anglers with great fishing spots dotted along the shores.
Henderson Lagoon is one of those hidden gems known only to locals and regular visitors to the area; a place of calm, almost transparent waters perfect for a stroll along seven kilometres of well-marked trails at the Winifred Curtis Scamander Reserve, home to around 300 varieties of native flora and some 80 species of woodland and marshland birds. Covering 75 hectares, the reserve features scenic spots perfect for a picnic, and spectacular displays of wildflowers in season.
